More digging and eggs!
Wow it is such a long time since I posted here. I have just been so busy with work and other things to post. Tilly has been very busy also. I am thinking that I really need to restrict her diet dramatically because she has yet again produced a huge huge clutch of eggs! We had noticed that her colours had darkened, particularly her spots, so we were ready for her to start the whole digging thing...

News and new viv
Well it has been a while since I posted here and lots of exciting things have been happening.First of all Tilly did gain her strength back after the odeal of egg laying. Keeping any pet is a huge learning curve and I think maybe if I could start again from scratch I would not have fed Tilly quite so well LOL. If female chams are fed a slightly restricted diet from very young they do not lay so...

Voice of a chameleon?
Do chameleons talk? Well ofcause chameleons comunicate with each other. The most obvious way is with colour changes and body language….. but I found this rather interesting

Food, wobbly legs and impaction!
Well after all the effort of digging and laying an inormous clutch of eggs Tilly was exasted and her body was weak. Her legs were wobbly and I was a bit concerned as I lifter her up to her basking spot to rest, that she may fall off the branch! One leg dangled loosly over the side of the branch. Eyes were dark and sunken in; tail all wrinkly looking. We offered her a dusted wax worm and despeite...

Egg-citment and wonder!
Well just a few days ago the waiting was finally over ^__^ Tilly had dug and re dug tunnels in the sand box but to no avail! The sandbox in her viv was just not to her taste at all, so we brought a huge plastic wheelie ‘paper recycling’ bin into the livingroom….cleaned it thoroughly, filled it with a mixture of damp sand and sterile soil. A lamp was fixed up over it and I held...

Waiting game
Its just a waiting game at the moment. Tilly is now digging digging and digging some more, only coming up to bask for a short time, with a sandcastle on her head LOL, before going back to her tunnel to scrape scrape scrape, changing the depth and direction of the tunnel. Oh I do wish that she would just dig any old hole… and just lay! Her eyes are looking a bit dark and sunken, and wow she...

Happy Christmas!
It’s Chrismas day folks! Tilly has decided to join in the festivities or at least start eating again ^__^ She is looking really well and is drinking everyday to. She does still poop sand but not to the same degree. No more digging activity in her sand box yet but I recon she could have another week left yet before we need to worry that she is egg bound. Everything is really quiet here this...

Worried....
I am quite concerned about the health of Tilly because she has stopped eating! It is common for gravid chams to stop eating but she doesnt seem to be drinking either? Sinse I put the sandbox in her viv for her she has actually taken to eating the sand!!!!!! then pooping out sand balls!!!!! This is not good. I have heard other owners say that their chams eat the sand to but why?????? is it a ...

Gravid cham!
I am pretty sure now that Tilly is gravid. She has been a bit fussy about what she eats the past couple of days and today has hardly eaten at all. She has been roaming about all over her viv so I am wondering if she is considering the best place to lay eggs or not. This is all quite interesting but a bit worrying at the same time because I want everything to go well for her.

Bright and beautiful!
The colours on Tilly seem to be getting brighter and brighter! Obviously she is no longer a baby chameleon and I am wondering if her colouration is a sign of her phyisical maturity. She is, after all, at the right age to be laying eggs and her lower belly is quite plump looking (Sorry Tilly I did mean that in a nice way). I do have a sand box for inside her viv, for her to dig in and lay her eggs...

strength, poise,grace and flexibiltiy
Tilly has the strength, poise and flexibility of a gymnast. A tree dweller by nature I suppose it is a must for her to be this way. She does some amazing climbing and contorts herself into very strange positions. To top it all, in true chameleon style she does it all in such slow motion LOL LOL LOL. It cracks me up! Only once have I ever witnessed her slip (she did not hurt herself) That...

patterns
I have been noticing that Tilly’s skin is becoming more patterned lately. She has a pale striped appearence and dark patterning. Sometimes it is more obvious than others. If I look closely I can even make out tiny turquoise spots which go all the way down her tail. The edges of her veil and the top serated part of her back do not seem as bright green as they used to (I am not sure if that is...

I'm ready to order now please!
Well I have been eating crickets crickets and more crickets of late, so it is definitely time for a change. I think I'll have the small juicy yellow locusts, with just the lightest dusting of calcium powder... Oh and meal worm side salad with extra watercress!
And what would Madam like to drink?
Hmmmm let me see.... a dripper full of your finest warmed filtered water would be very nice thank you
And would Madam like to choose anything from the dessert trolley? I can wholeheartedly recommend the grated apple and plump wax worms....or we can offer fresh sliced grapes...
Oh no thank you. I only have those on special occasions you know

Wow a super food!
Tilly is growing at a rate of knots…..On my journey to find the best food for her and consiquently the best gutload for her critters, I recently came across BEE POLLEN! Now it had puzzled me that wax worms did not need feeding - see feeding the critters - (I mean how nutritious is a worm who doesn’t eat, going to be?) I had been following a conversation on the UKChameleons forum...

Feeding the critters
Well of cause it is a complicated enough task just feeding Tilly but… because chameleons eat mainly live food, chameleon owners have to also accommodate, look after and decide on food for the food. Hmmm well I have done some research. Wow looking after the critters is a bit of a science. Did you know… wax worms are fine for a long time without food (so most folks don’t feed them)...

Googly eyes!
Tilly’s eyes are fascinating! I love the way that she can focus on me with one eye while the other one works independently, scanning for danger etc and checking out everything else that is going on…then she will perhaps notice a nice fat wiggly worm and suddenly both eyes are in sinc again working together. Her tongue will flick out and wham, yumm yumm. Bye bye Mr worm! Apparently...

Munching Mealies!
In an attempt to keep food both nutritious and interesting I ordered some Meal worms. Chameleons are reputed to love meal worms ^__^ but…. ewwwwh they are very strange creatures. I have to admit that crickets no longer give me the shivers. I appreciate all the little creatures as having their own purpose as well as being beautiful in their own right (sometimes it is hard to see past the...

Sweet chamelidreams!
Tilly has so far…. slept up on the top branches, down near the bottom, horizontal, vertical upright, and pointing downward; almost hidden sometimes and other times out in the open. She does seem to be sleeping mainly in a sort of partly hidden position on a branch very near to the left side of her viv which is neither high nor low. It amuses me how she keeps so very still. Her tail is almost...

It's raining skin!
Well yesterday I noticed that Tilly was starting to shed. There were just a couple of tiny little white bits of loosened skin on her side and armpits, so I made sure that the humidity was high for her with lots of spraying. This morning she looked like she was wearing a white frilly nightie LOL. I had no idea that it all happened so fast! I thought shedding took several days. When I first brought...

Lettuce!
Tilly has now discovered a liking for lettuce as well as cress. I have tried offering her grated carrot and chopped peeled grapes but these are really not to her liking at the moment…. they are just mere cricket food as far as she is concerned LOL. Lettuce however gets eaten even before the crickets are gone! Whats going on there ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ...

Ouch!
Tilly’s nails are like little needle points. I had not realized just how sharp her claws were until she decided to climb off my arm and around my neck where my skin is a bit more sensitive! Ouch her claws - despite the tiny size of them are very painful. She left a trail of red marks on my skin for about half an hour after. I have decided to do more than just watch her (purposely) and to...

Beware the mighty squish!
Well here’s something that chameleon owners are not normally warned about… and it’s about time I rectified this situation and told you all about watery critter guts! The first day I got Tilly she chomped so forcefully on a wax worm that its innards spewed out onto my arm! but at least that time it was just my arm. This time it was a cricket that she had just caught, whipped into...

Eating Crazy!
Well Tilly seems to be eating more and more every day now! Not only is she eating crickets like there is no tomorrow but she has even taken a liking to baby cress and nasturtium flowers! (nasturtium flower actually, because I wasn’t sure that too many would be good for her) I offered her a cricket sat on the cress… she ate the cricket then came back several times to finish off the...

Drinking!
Now working on the same principle of being very very obvious and consistent about triggering responses (see last post about feeding) I sprayed the foliage in Tillys tank for a long time today with hot filtered water. Non of this quick spray now, and a bit more again later. I mean I emptied the spray bottle. She seemed to be taking an interest in the water dripping on the leaves and the leaves...
